EVERYTHING but evening gowns and Vivaldi on Stradivarius violins. EVERYTHING is clear, you may say, although the main protagonist of the evening, the wonderful Satu Vänskä, will replace her violin with a microphone and give us EVERYTHING she has, singing songs from the legendary singer Nick Drake and the rock band Radiohead. But this is hardly EVERYTHING that you are about to hear. The members of the electro-acoustic ensemble ACO Underground will be joined by Brian Ritchie, known to the wider audience for his collaboration with the legendary Midnight Oil, and as the bass guitarist and co-founder of the American pop-folk-rock band Violent Femmes. We probably won’t have the chance to see Brian in a tailcoat, but nevertheless – EVERYTHING indicates that he might surprise us with fantastic Serious music… EVERYTHING is fine, in fact... EVERYTHING is great! But where does EVERYTHING lead to? To an electrifying, radically composed performance with classical, popular and experimental music including video installations by Jon Frank, consisting of two parts under one title - EVERYTHING. The role of the Master of Ceremonies has been entrusted to the acclaimed actor and comedian Gerry Connolly, who will deliver a show where truly EVERYTHING is possible… even a visit from her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II.

Thomas Demenga and the Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon?
For everyone in search of the perfect sound the answer seems too obvious. 
Through decades of tireless creativity their sound has become the trademark of the renowned fortress of European “sound” – the record label ECM, highly praised for its selection of music as well as the selection of musicians. The critics have named the characteristic transparent sound of ECM recordings the most beautiful sound next to silence.
But nevertheless, all music is unpredictable as it cuts and resounds into silence, it's more vivid and breaths deeper when we listen to it live.
After almost a century Dénes is returning to Maribor. For just a quick taste of the assorted variety of piano pieces, let us only mention his world-renowned and awarded repertoire of Liszt’s works - a renewed tribute to the great composer and virtuoso pianist that has, many years ago, played in Maribor himself and Messiaen’s Visions de l'Amen (Visions of the Amen) for two pianos, which he will perform in a tandem with his wife, the wonderful pianist Izabella Simon. Musica Surfica, presented at the Maribor Festival 2009 that has been richly awarded at film festivals in the US, Brazil, France and South Africa and received the title “surf movie of the year”, it does not come as a surprise that Richard Tognetti has taken on a new project that combines two of his greatest passions – music and surfing. The Reef is a visual poem. Its tone is defined by the confrontation of the powerful elements of nature and music. It’s a dreamlike movie that drags you into the wild waters around the majestic Ningaloo coral reef. It’s a story that talks of a day in the middle of the Australian dessert, at a windy secluded outpost next to the Indian Ocean. We find ourselves in the company of legendary wave tamers that co-created the dance-art that is surfing and of musicians that – according to Tognetti – offer “the possibility of hearing more in images and seeing further into music”. Click here to see the video. This project will present a film accompanied by the Australian Chamber Orchestra and guests. Some Beethoven, Shostakovich, Bach, … quotes of the legendary grunge band Alice in Chains … and also Ligeti’s Ramifications that has, with its intertwining lines illustrating the sounds of the desert’s dry period, managed to seduce the collective perception of the film makers: Jon Frank, a surf photographer without peer, Derek Hynd, the pioneer of finless surfing, thinker and doer, and the director and producer Mick Sowry. Admittedly, before the festival premiere of Musica Surfica we as organisers of the festival in Maribor, where the only thing wavy are the wine hills, were somewhat afraid of the audience’s reaction. Now before the introduction of our Reef in September we can confidently say that our faithful audience members will be joined by a number of suntanned Slovenian and foreign ocean lovers.

- “…the most brilliant Talent of the decade” (Süddeutsche Zeitung)/“[whose] performances are the stuff of legend" (Los Angeles Times) – the multiple Grammy Award winner, the soprano Dawn Upshaw

- and “one of the world’s most celebrated composers” (The Telegraph)/"...a voice of fertile imagination, originality and expressive subtlety" (Chicago Tribune) - the great composer and violist Brett Dean

- as well as numerous other Slovenian and foreign artists united in the unique Festival Maribor 2012 edition under the artistic lead of Richard Tognetti.
Listen in on the award-winning performance of E. Grieg's String Quartet by the ACO, which will also be presented in Maribor this year. The Festival Maribor received an additional affirmation this year: among 275 applicants from 32 EU countries knowledgeable assessors have chosen our festival as one of the 14 festivals to receive the highly desired EU award for European festivals.
